ABOUT US
We are always looking for new singers to join us. Shaldon Singers is a friendly non-auditioned choir of about 60. New members are made very welcome. We sing a wide range of classical music and give two concerts a year, in December and May. We support local charities with a retiring collection at each concert. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7.15 to 9 pm at St Peter’s Church in Shaldon (see map below). If you are interested in joining Shaldon Singers, please contact Ann Pardoe (01626 873709) for information, or email [email protected]. An ability to read music is an advantage, but more important are enthusiasm and a commitment to attend rehearsals. Membership costs £75 a year, and two free taster rehearsals are offered to anyone wishing to try singing with us. Read about our Past Concerts here, and our Rules and Policies here. Vivaldi’s ever popular Gloria opened the concert, and in this performance the Singers welcomed cello soloist Matthew Cusworth playing the Domine Deus movement. Other items included Rachmaninov’s Bogoroditse Devo, a setting of the Hail Mary prayer from the composer’s All Night Vigil of 1915, John Joubert’s There is No Rose of Such Virtue, a gentle and uplifting carol, and Elizabeth Poston’s simply beautiful Jesus Christ the Apple Tree. There was impeccable accompaniment from the Shaldon Sinfonietta, led by Anna Cockroft, who is also the choir’s regular rehearsal pianist. Four outstanding professional soloists – Jenny Abbott, Rebecca Smith, Jonathan Waterworth and Tim Mirfin – excelled in their arias. They also joined with the choir for the Hallelujah chorus, which brought everyone in the church to their feet in time-honoured fashion, creating one of the evening’s memorable moments. Chairman Ann Pardoe said: ‘I would like to thank Tim for his enthusiasm, lively conducting and the training he has provided throughout the year, and also Anna, who contributes so much to our rehearsals.’ A retiring collection in aid of Devon Air Ambulance raised £521.95. Petula Dodd, a volunteer with the charity, introduced the work of this emergency service that is entirely funded from donations. ****** SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2023 - you can read our latest newsletter by clicking the link below. ******* We have made a recording of ourselves singing the Mozart Ave Verum Corpus.
